Investigation Continues Into Soldier’s Death At Fort Pickett

The investigation continues in the death of a soldier killed at Fort Pickett Monday when a tree fell. The Virginia National Guard reports the soldier died during a training exercise when a tree was knocked over by severe weather at the base. Two other soldiers were injured in the mishap. The soldier has been identified as Chief Warrant Officer 2 Kevin P. Sullivan, 34, of Chesaning, Mich. He joined the Army in 2003 and was deployed to Iraq between 2007 and 2008.

Arrest Made In Attempted Abduction

Farmville Police have arrested and charged Brandon Lee Prendergast, 33,
of Farmville, in connection to the attempted abduction reported last Wednesday, July 17,
2019. Prendergast was arrested this morning at his residence without incident. Prendergast
has been charged with Attempted Abduction, and is currently being held in Piedmont
Regional Jail without bond.

Fatal Crash Victim ID’ed

The Farmville Police Department has released the identity of the
operator of the moped who was killed Tuesday morning, as the result of a motor vehicle
crash at the intersection of North Virginia Street, and Second Street. Robert Joseph
Murray, 24, of Farmville, was the operator of the 2019 Jiangsu moped.

New Colonial Heights Playground Project

The Maddie Mann Magnificant Play Park ground breaking ceremony took place recently at White Bank Park in Colonial Heights While most of the funds have been provided, the foundation still needs $30,000 for the entire project to be fully funded. Farmville Attempted Abduction

Shortly after noon on Wednesday, July 17, 2019, Farmville Police
responded to the area of N. Virginia St. and Second St. for a reported attempted
abduction. A female complainant advised that as she was walking on N. Virginia St.,
between Third St. and Second St., a white male, driving a maroon/burgundy SUV,
stopped abruptly, exited his vehicle, grabbed her and attempted to pull her into his
vehicle. The victim reported fighting back, possibly scratching his face with a set of
keys, and after breaking free, running from the scene. The suspect was described by
the victim as being a tall, thin, white male, between 30 and 40 years old, having a
goatee (no mustache) and sandy brown hair that was shaved close on the sides. The
suspect reportedly had tattoos on his left arm and was wearing a white tank top shirt
and wire-rimmed eye glasses.

Burkeville Man Faces Charges In Shooting

Charges of malicious wounding and weapons counts face Nottoway County man in connection with the shooting of a North Carolina man Saturday night near Burkeville. Authorities say 46 year old Luckey Jefferson of 301 Cauthorne Street in Burkeville was arrested in the wake of the incident. Investigators say in another incident 25 years ago, Jefferson was sentenced to several years in prison after firing at a man and missing him outside the old Blackstone Memorial Center.

The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) urges parents and caregivers to prevent tragedies surrounding kids and pets left in hot vehicles by taking a few minutes to make a plan. The simplest thing to do is to place your purse or briefcase in the back seat with your baby or pet, something you wouldn’t leave your car without, regardless of a change in your routine. You can also put your cell phone or employee badge in the back seat. also suggests leaving a stuffed animal in your child’s car seat when it is not in use. When you strap your child into her car seat, put the stuffed animal in the front seat with you so you remember your child is in the car. Structure Fire In South Hill

A structure fire on Theatre Road in South Hill Wednesday morning. According to authorities, all residents of the home got out. Traffic has been affected in the vicinity of the Highway 58 and Route 1 crossroads. Investigators are trying to determine a cause and efforts are being made to collect donations for the family as the residence was reportedly heavily damaged.

Investigation Continues Into Shooting At Petersburg Plasma Center

A 20-year-old Virginia man walked into a plasma donation center during a Fourth of July community cookout, asked to use the restroom, then began randomly stabbing people with a long knife as customers and staff members ran for cover, authorities said Friday. Jairique Shannon had donated plasma at Octapharma Plasma in Petersburg at least once before and authorities do not know why he attacked people at the center on Thursday, said Commonwealth’s Attorney Cheryl Wilson. Three people were hurt and remained hospitalized Friday.
