Two women arrested on drug charges

Two women are under arrest on drug charges. Brunswick County Sheriff’s Deputies to 27-year-old Kendra Knight and 23-year-old Alyrica Jones into custody following a controlled drug buy and traffic stop. Both women are charged with felony child endangerment and knight was charged with distribution of heroin.

Bike Virginia Tour Announces 2020 Dates

The Bike Virginia Tour is pleased to partner with the
Farmville-Prince Edward County Virginia region for the 2020 annual tour, the 33 rd year of the
event. Farmville last hosted the event in 1997, and previously for the very first year of the tour in
The 2019 event was held in Woodstock and Harrisonburg Virginia.
The next Bike Virginia Tour will be held June 19-24, 2020 in the Farmville-Prince Edward
region and features 1,600 cyclists of all skills and abilities for six days of touring the beautiful
Virginia countryside and visiting many places of interest.
The 2020 tour will begin on Friday, June 19 in Farmville.

Longwood University Police Chief To Retire

Longwood University Police Col. Bob Beach, who since 2007 has led the police department, is announcing his retirement after this academic year. Beach implemented a number of changes, notably doubling the number of sworn officers, incorporating force-multiplying technology (including hundreds of security cameras and emergency phone), creating dozens of classes available to students, and increasing the level of emergency preparedness for potential crises. He also ushered in a new era of cooperation with town and county law enforcement, building bridges that have created new opportunities for the community to work together.

More Nottoway County Schools Headed For Accreditation

Four of five schools in the Nottoway County School District are expected to be accredited after latest Standards Of Learning (SOL) test scores were released. The new Superintendent Dr. Tameshia Grimes saying there have been solid gains made in student achievement and the four schools on the way to accreditation are up from three last year. Also, Blackstone Primary is likely to move from “Accredited With Conditions” to Accredited thanks to gains in English.

SC Man Sentenced In Lunenburg County Murder

A man from South Carolina sentenced for first degree murder in Lunenburg Circuit Court. 23 year old Montai Mervin was handed 68 years behind bars, with 38 years suspended in the death of 22 year old Bryant Craig of Lunenburg County on September 15th last year. Authorities say Mervin shot Craig four times with an assault rifle, which he then tossed into the Nottoway River. The weapon was found eight months later by divers.

Farmville Town Council Public Hearing Upcoming

Farmville Town Council will hold a public hearing on Wednesday, August 14, 2019 at 6:30 p.m.,
in the Council Chamber, located on the second floor of the Town Hall, 116 North Main Street,
Farmville Virginia to hear citizen comments on the following requests:
David and Sunae Pletcher are requesting to rezone a portion of property located at 1406
South Main Street, while Helton House, Inc. is requesting a conditional use permit to allow them to operate a day support program for adults with intellectual deficits in an area of a building located at
1713 W. Third Street . Farmville Town Council will consider these requests following the public hearing.

Single Vehicle Crash Kills Farmville Resident

Virginia State Police Senior Trooper J.T. Farris is investigating a single-vehicle fatal crash in Prince Edward County. The crash occurred July 31, 2019 at 6:37 p.m. on Route 658, east of Route 650.

A 1999 Ford Explorer was traveling along Route 658 when it first ran off the right side of the road, crossed over the roadway and then ran off the left side of the road. The vehicle overturned several times ejecting both the driver and passenger.

The driver, Willie K. Paterson Jr., 61, of Farmville, Va., died at the scene.

The passenger, Catrisa L. Paterson, 38, of Pamplin, Va., was transported to Southside Community Hospital in Farmville, where she died later that same night.

A 2-year-old male passenger was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of serious injuries. He was not secured in a child safety seat.

A 17-year-old male passenger was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of minor injuries. The 17-year-old was wearing a seat belt.

Neither of the deceased was wearing a seat belt.

Three Year Old Shot To Death In Colonial Heights

Police they’re investigating the shooting death of a 3-year-old child in Colonial Heights. Colonial Heights Police Captain William Anspach told The Progress-Index that police received a call about the shooting shortly before 7 a.m. They found a woman who was upset and holding the child, who suffered a single gunshot wound and was pronounced dead. Anspach said two people were in the home with the child when the shooting occurred. They were the woman whom police found holding the child and another female who appeared to have special needs.

Victoria Man Sentenced On Firearms Counts

A Victoria man has been sentenced to five years in prison on felony firearms counts. Authorities say 22 year old Shane Douglas Moore of 1411 Fifth Street stole a handgun from a vehicle in Victoria in January, and a handgun from a pickup truck in Kenbridge in March. He said he traded the guns for drugs and the weapons were never found. He had a previous conviction in September last year for a break-in at Springer Insurance Company in Victoria in which his DNA was matched at the scene from blood he left when he broke a glass door and window, he was designated a “Violent Felon.”

Blackstone Teens Arrested After Stealing Vehicle

Two Blackstone teens are under arrest after police say they stole a vehicle. They were apprehended following a police pursuit in Amelia County. The vehicle in question was stolen from Hawkes Funeral Home in Blackstone.
The Courier Record reports both suspects are males, 16 and 17 years old, and both are from Falls Street.
